Cost of Purchasing a POS System

The cost of a Point of Sale system will vary greatly depending on a number of factors.

·          Software Users: The cost for software is usually based on the number of users (or computers) that will be accessing the software at the point of sale and in the office.  As you add more users the cost of the software goes up proportionally.

·          Hardware: The average cost for hardware for a complete point of sale station (including computer, receipt printer, scanner and cash drawer) will range between $2,000 to $3,500 depending on the equipment selected.

·          Services: the cost for services may include implementation, training and support.  These services will vary depending on your general knowledge of computers and your level of experience implementing a Point of Sale system.

·          Additional products: you will need to consider additional costs which include: credit card software, accounting software with integration, e-commerce integration and other add-on products.

·          Initial Purchase: most business find that the initial purchase of a Point of Sale system will range between 2% to 3% of their annual gross sales.  If you are a singe store with sales of $500,000, you can expect the initial cost of the system to range between $10,000 to $15,000.

·          Ongoing Costs: ongoing costs per year include software maintenance programs, (which provide update to the software, ranging between 12% - 18% of the cost of the software being licensed) additional training, support and other hardware maintenance costs.
