The Value of Friendships

Many retailers go to a lot of trouble making their customers feel like "guests." I'd like to suggest that they would be better off trying to forge friendships.

Treating your customer as a guest isn't a bad idea, it's just short sighted. A guest may be pleased and satisfied with a particular visit, but it doesn't translate into the same affinity and desire to return again and again, that is felt when visiting a good friend.

Friendships are special things. You go out of your way to see friends. You care about their health, what they need, and you enjoy their company. Guests are frequently unwelcome and sometimes they know it. Friends are rarely unwelcome.

It takes two to create a friendship. Retailers have to get to know their customers and listen to their concerns in order to establish the trust necessary for a strong, loyal, long-lived friendship.

At this moment, hundreds of retailers are trying to capture loyalty. Retailers understand the concept of repeat business and want to do what they can to get it. Both online and offline stores, from Amazon.com to WalMart, use a variety of tactics to get to know their customers' habits.

Now Available - Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management Systems Version 2.0

Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management Systems (RMS) Version 2.0 is now available for existing RMS customers, with a current Maintenance Agreement. Upgrades to RMS 2.0 are scheduled by appointment and will require Client Services hours for the update.  If you are using a software customization with RMS, your customization may require minor modifications to be compatible with this new update.  If you are a multi store customer using HQ, we strongly recommend updating to take advantage of the new features, however, you will be able to continue purchasing lanes for Version 1.3 until 1/15/08.  If you are interested in updating to Version 2.0 please contact Andrea Ellerbrock at (303) 738-1800 Ext 324 or E-mail her at andrea.ellerbrock@armsys.com.

ARMS Version 2.0 offers new capabilities that enable retailers to adapt quickly to complex retail requirements. 

Enhanced Inventory Management

·Work with an easy-to-use from to create and modify multi-dimensional matrix items, as well as add or remove dimensions from existing items.

·Locate items quickly by searching on the supplier reorder number.

·Upload item costs to headquarters when cost information changes at the store level, helping ensure accurate, chain-wide item cost reports based on weighted average.

Improved purchasing control

·Add items to POs on-the-fly using a new dialogue window.

·For specialized purchasing requirements, export PO’s to MS Office Word and MS Excel.

·View POs in matrix format.

New Pricing Capabilities

·Use quantity-on-hand filters to change prices only for items in stock within a given department.

·Set percentage or pricing discounts for “Buy X get Y” and Mix/Match quantity discount scenarios.

·Set up and select “by price” or “by percentage” options.

 Address Verification Support (AVS)

·Help ensure optimal credit card discount rates when cards need to be entered by hand.

Simplified Product Activation

·          Product activation using product keys instead of using a software dongle for easy upgrades and software additions.

Tech Tips

 

How can I generate a report that will show the total amount of returns for a specific day or set of days?

1. In Store Operations Manager go to Reports | Sales |   Detail Sales.
2. Remove the current date criteria and create a
    search criteria for Date Sold for your desired day or
    range of dates.
3. Add another search criteria for Qty Sold < 0
   (This will show items that were added back into
     inventory)
4. Click OK.

This should generate a report that will show all of your Returns for your given date/s as well as a total of all items that were returned.

Bob Evans, Director of Sales and Marketing

Bob joined ARMS in March of 2004 as the Director of Sales and Marketing.  Bob’s background includes seven years in retail, two years as a college instructor and ten years of sales and sales management.  In his previous position he sold bar coding technology to retail, manufacturing and distribution systems.  Since being at ARMS, Bob has seen great changes in the industry.  During this time, ARMS has undertaken Microsoft Business Solutions Retail Management System (RMS).  “Selling Retail Pro and RMS is exciting as they are the two leading point of sale and inventory control systems in the world.” 

A resident of Colorado for 20 years, he calls this home.  He is the proud father of a son, John, and a daughter, Sarah, both in college.  His hobbies involve home remodeling projects, fishing and generally being in the outdoors.

Microsoft Windows Vista

As you are aware, Windows Vista, Microsoft’s new operating system, was released January.  As in the past, with any new operating system release, RMS and all peripheral hardware need to be tested and approved.  Microsoft is currently testing Windows Vista for compatibility with RMS and will make any necessary adjustments for this new operating system release.  We are also testing Vista in house for compatibility with RMS POS peripherals and other devices.  At this time we are not currently supporting Microsoft Vista with RMS and will notify you when this operating system is officially supported.   

It is always prudent to wait until a Service Pack is released for any new operating system release. Many computer vendors, such as Dell, will be offering Windows XP for many months and often include a Windows Vista Upgrade at no additional charge.  At this time, if you are currently purchasing a new computer, you need to specify Windows XP Professional.  If you have any questions please feel free to call your sales consultant.
