This Mother's Day, Mom's Getting Pampered, According to NRF Survey

Pampered Moms

By Kathy Grannis

Washington, April 28, 2011 - Often known as the voice of reason, and even frugality, mom doesn't expect much for Mother's Day. But this year, her loved ones are fully intent on pampering her with some of the finer things in life. According to NRF's 2011 Mother's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGresearch, the average person celebrating the holiday is expected to spend $140.73 on gifts, up from $126.90 last year, and a return to 2008 spending levels. Total spending is expected to reach $16.3 billion.*

"This Mother's Day, the woman who often puts herself last is being put first," said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. "Americans are in a much better position to spend this year and will push the daily stresses of high gas and food costs aside for one day to celebrate the most important women in the world to them."

This year, husbands and sons across the country plan to spoil mom a bit, as more indulgent gifts will prove the most popular. According to the survey the number of people who plan on buying electronics (13.3%) will rise 48 percent from last year (9.0%) - and they're spending more, too. Those buying electronics will  shell out $94.91 on smartphones, cameras and even tablet devices, up eight percent from $87.70 last year.** Jewelry will also be a popular gift option for mom, with 31.2 percent of celebrants planning to buy mom silver, gold or diamonds, up 19 percent from last year. Total spending on jewelry is expected to reach $3.0 billion.

Restaurants and other businesses will also benefit from the billions of dollars that come in for one of the biggest holidays of the year. More than half (54.7%) of all celebrants will treat mom to a nice dinner or brunch, spending a total of $3.1 billion. Additionally, one-third (31.8%) of Americans will buy mom clothing or accessories ($1.3 billion total) and nearly two-thirds (64.9%) will buy mom flowers ($1.9 billion). Consumers will also shell out $1.6 billion on gift cards and $1.2 billion on personal services such as a trip to a day spa.

Retail Pro Promotions Module for Version 8.6

 Promotions

The new Retail Pro Version 8.6 Promotions Module offers retailers the versatility in defining a variety of promotions. While some of the promotions are designed to be run independently, you can choose to "combine" many of the promotions to run at the same time; for example, customer-based discounts (like a club or special rewards group), coupons, BOGO offers, quantity discounts and free gift promotions can be run concurrently. The Promotions Module has the capability of assigning a start and end date to the promotions so that they can be set up well ahead of time. This type of flexibility will be extremely useful in a fast-paced single store or multi-store environment to speed up the check out process at point of sale, while decreasing cashier error. The Retail Pro Version 8.6 Promotions module is part of the current Version 8.6 core release (November 2010 release). It requires current Software Assurance and approximately 2 hours of Client Services for setup and training.

Whether you are on V8.6 and are interested in this module, or a version prior to V8.6 and are interested in updating to this new release of Retail Pro*, please contact your account manager.

To learn more contact your Account Manager today at (800) 305-0461 and ask for Stacey or Andrea or E-mail us at insidesales@armsys.com

*Current Software Assurance Plan Required. Update/Upgrade Services to V8.6 not included.

How to Focus Your Finding-Customers Efforts

Focus Your Effortsby Laura Lorber

To start a business, you don't need financing, a website or business plan. All you need is a customer.

But even when it comes to the all-important task of acquiring those first customers, a new business is usually looking to save as much time and money as possible.

Buying a customer list can be expensive, so most small businesses look to build their own. The best way to do it? Get smart about networking, according to Sheryl Johnson, founder of Pittsburgh-based BD-PRo Marketing Solutions. Here are some of her tips for expanding a contact database.

Have a networking strategy. Know your networking goals, and join groups where you'll be most likely to connect with the people you most want to meet both online and at in-person events.

Make networking part of your everyday life. Keep your elevator pitch at the ready so that the people you meet know what you do and who you can help. You never know who you'll bump into or who they might know.

Ask for referrals. After each sale, make it part of your routine to ask for a referral. Other good sources of referrals include employees and email newsletters that can be passed along.

Follow up. Create a sound strategy to stay in touch with people and keep on top of what their needs are. Having a contact management system can help you stay on track.

Tech Tips

 Tech Tips

Always check your system date when you sign on so all of your documents are dated correctly.

Would you like to set up a workstation to launch a specific document or chapter of a document when you select the E-manuals button?

By default the E-manuals button launches the e-manuals home page. You can configure your system to directly display a specific document or chapter from within the User's Guide when the button is selected. For example, at a POS workstation you might want the button to display the Recording Sales and Returns chapter instead of the E-manuals home page. At a receiving station you could display the Receiving chapter and so on.

1. Access Workstation Preferences > System > E-Manuals URL at the workstation
2. Select the Browse button and navigate to the folder containing the E-manuals documents (by default this is the \Emanuals\Docs folder on the same hard drive as the program files).
3. Locate and select the V8_10_Record_Sales.pdf file in the Select File dialog. Select Open to return this file to the E-manuals URL preference field.
4. Select Save on the side toolbar.
5. Return to the main retail pro menu and select the E-manuals button. The Recording Sales and Returns chapter will be displayed.
6. Repeat for other workstations, selecting the appropriate PDF file to display for each
