Want Happy Holidays for Your Business? Put Hoopla on Hold

By Ned Smith, BusinessNewsDaily Senior Writer

If you want to reach consumers and drive sales during the 2011 holiday season, you should forget about holiday hoopla like mistletoe and chestnuts roasting on the fire and make an all-out effort to engage with your customers, new research suggests.

According to data collected from 4,200 consumers by Motista, a consumer research company, retailers are falling down on the job when it comes to building customer engagement. In their most recent study, only 18 percent of consumers indicated an emotional connection to their retailers.

With only 24 percent of consumers indicating they would make their next relevant purchase with the retailers they patronize today, retailers must establish and leverage an emotional connection to retain their customers and increase sales.

The Motista researchers said the key findings in their survey illustrated that building deeper connections with consumers can help drive higher levels of purchase intent, response rates, online engagement and advocacy.

Customer Summit 2011 Was a Great Success!

Customer SummitAdvanced Retail Management Systems hosted its Annual Customer Summit "Synergize" in Littleton, Colorado on August 11th.  ARMS trainers Kelly Walton and Randy Hanson conducted Retail Pro training sessions on Scheduled Tasks and Monthly Maintenance, the new V8.6 Promotional Pricing module, and a session on Mobile retailing.  Jeana Thomas and Marty Katz held CounterPoint training sessions on Dash Board Features, Using Price Sheets for Markdowns, and using 2B Solutions for Physical Inventory.  Guest speakers were also on hand that talked about cash flow, inventory control and PCI compliancy.  The day also included vendor presentations, a great lunch and some fantastic gifts from a drawing at the end of the day including an iPad Touch and a Kindle.  Click here to see some pictures from the event.

Everyone that responded to our survey after the event said they would likely return next year.  Some of the comments from customers and vendors included: "I appreciated Kelly's cheerful presentation skills", "I thought it was a very well-ran, thoughtful, and productive event", "Randy's training was the most helpful session", and "the Customer Summit was fantastic".

We had a great attendance from both clients and vendors and look forward to seeing you next year at Customer Summit 2012.

CPMobile Update:

This fall, Radiant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: RADS) will launch CPMobile, its new mobile POS technology, to the specialty retail market. The product is currently in pilot at several retail stores and will expand to several more across the country this summer. CPMobile tightly integrates with a retailer's CounterPoint retail POS system, making it easy for them to run their business from anywhere and deliver a more personal customer experience.

""With CPMobile, Radiant is delivering similar mobile innovation seen in large retail stores like Apple or Nordstrom, in a package that's built and priced for the specialty retail market. CPMobile makes it easy for SMB retailers to bring mobile technology into their business that will enrich the customer service experience. It provides the same technology as big box retailers, married with the personal service only a local business can provide."

CPMobile is different from other mobile technologies available today. Here's how:

  • CPMobile is completely integrated with a retailer's CounterPoint system so they can easily access comprehensive sales and inventory reports that incorporate both mobile and counter sales.
  • The CPMobile check out process prompts retailers to collect an e-mail address and other customer details and automatically links those details to purchase history. This powerful integration allows for very targeted e-mail marketing, promotional and loyalty initiatives, further enhancing the customer connection.
  • Retailers can run their business anywhere with CPMobile, which stays connected to CounterPoint and can accept payments from any location, such as at trade shows, sidewalk sales or in pop-up shops. A retailer can sell wherever they are with CPMobile.
  • Consumers are more conscious of sustainable and environmentally-friendly businesses. With CPMobile, retailers can quickly and easily e-mail receipts to customers to reduce their paper usage.

Small Business Lessons from the Hottest Retailers

BY Carol Tice

Small Business LessonsIt's been an ugly year...for many small retailers, that is. When it comes to national chains, some have floundered, too. But a few have kept right on growing.

How did the hottest chains thrive despite the nation's economic malaise?

Here's a look at some of the success strategies of the retailers who made the National Retail Federation's 2011 Hot 100 Retailers list for the fastest-growing companies based on 2010 vs. 2009 sales, as published in Stores magazine:

Diversify. Top winner Ascena Retail Group was formerly known as Dress Barn. In late 2009, it acquired two tween brands, Maurices and Justice to provide variety to its demographics, which historically ran to middle-aged women. This allowed the company to capitalize on growth in multiple apparel niches, including tapping into teens' disposable income.

Combine low price with high perceived value. Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market was able to grow its sales 38 percent with an emphasis on fresh, organic food delivered at lower prices. (This chain also has the benefit of deep pockets in driving its expansion -- it's owned by British conglomerate Tesco.)
